Brunette's Guide to Dry Shampoo

I was inspired by my fellow classmate, Macie Flynn's blog on hair and decided to write a similar post *with her permission* on dry shampoo for brunettes with oily hair.

I like Macie, have DEATHLY straight hair that is prone to oil. The other challenge though is that my hair is brown. That makes dry shampoo use a little bit more difficult as spray is typically white. You can probably imagine white spray and brunette hair doesn't always mix well. BUT, as I'm always told by my hairdresser, it's unhealthy to wash your hair every day. So dry shampoo has become my best friend. Below are a couple reviews of popular types, cheap and expensive, effective and ineffective.

1. Living Proof - A little on the pricier side but still effective. The smell is super fresh and the formula soaks up oil pretty well. They also have travel size, which is always a plus. I don't have issues getting this powder out of my hair once it has soaked the oil up. Looking for a little extra volume? Try this.

2. Dove - The price is right here but that would be about all that is right. It leaves a little cloud of powder around you and I think makes your hair feel crunchy. I love Dove otherwise but wouldn't recommend this.

3. Dry Bar Detox - It makes sense that Dry Bar produces a great dry shampoo considering they specialize in styling. This is one of my favorites but it is definitely a little pricier. I first tried it in the travel size portion though so I was able to see I liked it before I bought a larger size. The spray smells good but does kind of leave a cloud around you that is sometimes makes you cough. The spray comes on in a sort of light brown color though so it is really easy to get out of your hair without leaving any white remnants on your scalp.

4. Pantene - Again, the price is right but that is all I would say is right. The bottle broke two days after I bought it and I thought it left my hair feeling crunchy and gross.

5. Amika - The bottle is pretty and it smells very good. I liked this dry shampoo but honestly didn't love it enough for the price. I know a lot of people who use this kind and like it though so I may try again. It definitely left my hair feeling pretty soft but was hard to get the powder out of my hair. I linked the mini size so you could try that first.

6. Aveda Shampure: I am typically an Aveda fan but not of this product. It smells good so that is a plus. It comes out in a powder form though, very similar to baby powder and it left my hair feeling hard and gross. I also had a really hard time getting it out of my scalp and it left a white powder layer on my scalp. I think it may be a great product for blondes though or when trying to get better volume. Not worth the price.

7. Batiste - All I can say is that Batiste is BAE. This is my go to for many reasons. First, it works and does the trick every time. I have used this to help train my hair to not need a shower every day and it has helped. It smells great too and never leaves much white powder like remnants in my hair. It also is CHEAP. I think that this works just as well as most of the expensive products and comes in super size amounts which is great for someone who uses a lot of dry shampoo like I do. Try it, you won't be sorry.

*PRO TIP* - Hold the bottle at least 6 inches away from your hair and spray a small layer on the top of your hair/scalp. Then spray a small layer underneath the first layer of hair on both sides of your head. Let is sit in your hair for 5-10 minutes (depending on how oily). THEN, take a blow dryer to your hair, yes even though it is dry, to start getting the powder out. After that, finger out the rest of the white remnants.

Also, if you really have trouble, try spraying the dry shampoo in before you go to bed and sleep on it.

Types I still want to try:
